Elbasvir and Grazoprevir are combined in this medicine.
Elbasvir + Grazoprevir is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat long-term hepatitis C virus infection of the liver by decreasing the amount of virus in your body and improves the condition of your liver.
Take Elbasvir + Grazoprevir exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
This medicine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
If you miss a dose and it is within 16 hours before the next dose is due, take the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
If it is more than 16 hours before the next dose is due, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take Elbasvir + Grazoprevir if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Alert your doctor if you have moderate to severe liver disease as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Elbasvir + Grazoprevir with certain antibiotics, medicines used to treat tuberculosis, epilepsy, medicines used for HIV infection and other certain medicines. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- current or previous hepatitis B virus infection (infection of the liver caused by a virus that's spread through blood and body fluids)
- diabetes
- mild liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Routine liver function tests may be done before and during your treatment with this medicine.
- If you ever had hepatitis B virus infection, it could become active again during or after treatment of hepatitis C virus with Elbasvir + Grazoprevir. This may cause serious liver problems. Your doctor may perform a test to determine your risk of hepatitis B virus reactivation before the start of your treatment.
- A screening test to identify the variation of the virus may also be done before you take this medicine.
Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these tests.
Elbasvir + Grazoprevir does not reduce your risk of passing Hepatitis C to other people through sexual contact or contamination with infected blood. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid spreading the infection to others. Do not share razors, nail clippers, and toothbrushes to others. Practice safe sex; use condoms to protect your partner.
Elbasvir + Grazoprevir may cause dizziness or tiredness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, dry mouth, weakness, irritability, swelling of the face or mouth, muscle and joint pain, itching, hair loss, difficulty sleeping, and anxiety.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- unusual changes in mood or behaviour (being too depressed or agitated)
- yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, dark coloured urine, tiredness, swelling in the legs and ankles
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Elbasvir + Grazoprevir with the following medicines:
- certain antibiotics e.g. nafcillin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz, etravirine, atazanavir, cobicistat
- medicines to treat TB (lung infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
- medicine for sleep disorder e.g. modafinil
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizure) e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine
- certain medicine used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin
- medicine used to treat high blood pressure in the lungs e.g. bosentan
- herbal medicines e.g. St. John’s wort
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
- medicine to treat fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole
- cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin
- medicine for diabetes e.g. insulin
- other medicine used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. tacrolimus
- medicine for cancer e.g. sunitinib
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Elbasvir + Grazoprevir.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol. Consuming large amount of alcohol is very damaging to the liver.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
